American critic and curator Vince Aletti has, since the 1970s, been gathering photographs torn from magazines and books, gradually building a private archive of printed imagery. For the first time, the hundreds of tearsheets, newspaper clippings, gallery announcements and other fragments stored in a drawer within an antique flat file in his East Village apartment have been brought together and documented in a publication titled The Drawer.

The seventy-five layered compositions assembled by Aletti form a reflection on the material life of images and the printed page. Moving between personal collection and visual essay, the work reveals an attentive engagement with photography as it circulates through mass media, advertising, fashion and art contexts.

Taken together, these assemblages celebrate the persistence of photographic imagery while also tracing shifting notions of desire, intimacy and collective memory. The project becomes a meditation on how images accumulate meaning over time, and how they shape, reflect and complicate the ways we understand ourselves and the cultural histories we inhabit.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
