The Axe Will Survive the Master is an oblique record of a world under strain. Produced over twelve years across multiple continents, the work follows shifting global conditions shaped by authoritarian power, political unrest and the breakdown of social agreements. The images move through episodes of contemporary history marked by conflict, from uprisings in the Arab world to the war in Ukraine, tracing the lingering effects of geopolitical tension and historical fracture.

Bringing together photographs made between 2013 and 2025, the publication concludes a trilogy of works concerned with power, resistance and the fragile status of democratic ideals. The sequence oscillates between public events and private moments, revealing how large-scale political forces intersect with everyday life.

Through a sustained and condensed visual approach, the work reflects on the capacity of photography to bear witness to instability and endurance. The resulting sequence forms a lyrical yet disquieting meditation on survival, sovereignty and the structures that shape lived experience.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
