Essay by Simone Pallotta

A selection of pictures taken by graffiti writers during the 1990s, when graffiti culture first emerged in Rome. The book looks entirely at the social rite of writing rather than at the artworks: each page, drawn from the photo albums of Roman crews and writers, reveals expeditions, crews, meetings and the other activities that built the ties of the community. Published on the occasion of the group exhibition From Street To Art at the Italian Cultural Institute of New York, with an essay by Simone Pallotta.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
