"After offering countless lessons, assignments, critical advice, I felt the need to put down in writing some of my thoughts on the practice of photography and teaching, to derive a sense of accomplishment from it. These writings have taken the form of a small book. Teaching photography, unlike teaching French or driving, gives no measurable result. (How much have I helped such a person to be more sensitive in their visual universe?) This fact puts all of us who teach photography on the edge of the springboard – keeping things alive. What follows does not aim to present a thesis to defend or give exhaustive explanations on concepts or technologies. Rather, it aims to lay a foundation that can provoke thoughts and stimulate discussions. And above all, encourage young photographers and teachers to take some risks."

Originally published in English in 2005 (Teaching Photography: Notes Assembled).

This Italian translation by Alice Benessia and curatorial edition by Alessandra Capodacqua, Alice Benessia, and Chiara Cecchetti is the second Italian edition with a renewed graphic design by CH-RO-MO, after the first edition sold out quickly.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
