Hierarchy of Genres starts from a mistake: printing on the wrong side of glossy photographic paper, where the ink cannot penetrate the surface and stays suspended in an unstable state. Before it changes, coagulates or disappears, each print is photographed again. The accident becomes a method that explores the threshold between photography and painting, figuration and abstraction, control and loss of control. Calabrese follows the six traditional pictorial genres, from history painting to still life, drawing on a different source for each: images of the events of September 2001, selfies of friends, screenshots of embraces from films and series, early landscapes shot on film, flawed animals from natural history archives and flowers photographed during the pandemic. Abstract works made by overlapping wet sheets sit between the series. A joint text accompanies the book, written for the artist's solo exhibition at Viasaterna.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
