A work inspired by the traditional Japanese poem. A haiku makes a large tapestry of thoughts from few words, built on "cutting": the juxtaposition of two images or ideas with a cutting word between them, a kind of punctuation that marks the moment of separation. Gargaglione approaches visual imagery in the same manner, using a photocopier to compose his own haikus: layered images in which enlarged abstractions act as the cutting word and graduated blacks as punctuation. Memory is documented through photographic images that are then manipulated, so that the pictures speak to one another while also contradicting and cancelling each other out, producing new narratives.
