Aliqual is the name of a place parallel to L'Aquila, the Italian city hit by an earthquake in 2009. In Aliqual, chaos becomes a new form of order; it's a reality that nobody wants to see anymore, but it embodies the wounded soul of a suspended city and its people, who are stuck in a phase of transition. Aliqual is a metaphor — the neglect L'Aquila is left in creates room for a deeper reflection that doesn't necessarily have to do with what is being photographed. Starting in 2009, Mastrorillo re-entered the town, explored the buildings and took pictures of the empty, cracked, and junk strewn apartments and offices. Purposely repetitive, narrow and myopic, he keeps looking at stuff until it falls apart and begins to come together again in new form. If the earthquake tore apart the familiar order, by staring long and hard, and repeating things, Mastrorillo hopes to restore order. Tragic events can temporarily shift the social order of a place, but they can also reorive perception of the things that surround us.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
