Carlo Scarpa only designed the entrance to the University of Venice, which was built posthumously by Sergio Los in 1984. The gate, placed in one of the first meeting points between the city and its visitors, acts as a kind of statement of intent through which Venice asserts itself against those who describe it as reactionary, static, and resistant to change.

If Carlo Scarpa could only imagine the effect his architectural work would have on the city, Guido Guidi, through his photographs, was able to fully capture that second life that gaze and atmosphere give to urban works.

Continuing the work begun with the Brion Tomb (published by Hatje Cantz in 2011), Guidi photographed the variations produced by light on concrete and steps at different times of day and across the changing seasons, as well as the shifting relief that shadows bring to each architectural form, projecting its mutable geometry onto the ground.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
