¿Cuánto viven las casas? (How long do houses live?) is the story of a period of uprootedness and lack of belonging, both in a territory and at a time when family ties break, exposing the fragility of the author's children's childhood and of her own motherhood. Through images and texts Daniela Unger reflects on her experience of motherhood, which confronts her with a deep inner crisis and sends her back to her own childhood. The story unfolds as the family leaves Mexico, her native country, to live isolated in Valparaíso, Chile, a hostile and dramatic land, in its territory and in its history marked by dictatorship and latent violence. It is built on the interwoven voice of the author, in texts and images, and that of her children, aged three and six, who narrate through drawings and anecdotes of their dreams and experiences, transcribed by hand by the elder son and included in the book as inserts.
