Hay pájaros en el alambre (There are birds on the wire) uses text and images to offer a unique and personal reflection on the most significant revolutionary movement of the second half of the twentieth century in Mexico. "This book emerged from an exploration of my parents' photographic archive; they were a couple of doctors who helped build a community health system in Chiapas, both before and after the uprising of the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) in 1994. Through a careful selection of their images, their presence at social demonstrations, the training of community health workers, everyday moments at home, and their reinterpretation, I seek to capture not only the significant moments of community life but also the experiences and emotions of my own childhood, lived amid resistance and its silences. From this dual perspective, that of the girl I once was and the adult who questions today, I explore the bond with my parents, the memory of a disputed territory, and who I became amidst those images, shaped by historical events and their resonance in the present."

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
