Ausencia (Absence) interweaves three stories in a poetic and powerful narrative; between images and texts it tells the story of three women whose lives have been deeply marked by absence, fundamental themes in Mexico and in the world today: forced disappearance, femicide, migration and family violence, and a judicial, social and political system in which impunity prevails. It is made up of three books joined into one piece by a binding that lets each story be seen on its own while weaving them together in an object that conveys the fragility of its content. Each book bears the name of its protagonist. Gemma is the story of a young woman of 25, the victim of a forced disappearance in 2011; for years the author worked with Gemma Mávil's parents, who opened to her their intimate world, her life, diaries, poems, photos and paintings, and the images and texts allow a glimpse of a life suspended in time at the moment of her disappearance. Iriana tells of a trip to Cuba during which a couple "adopts" the author as their daughter, sharing with her the nostalgia and longing of those who left the island for social and economic reasons. Mariceu gives cohesion to the three books through the author's own voice, as she explores the fragility that she and her sisters lived from childhood because of the absent figure of the father and their social and economic situation, revealing the experiences of violence to which they were exposed.
