ERIC has a seemingly insatiable desire to photograph people, and his use of bright flash in daylight makes his candid portraits practically leap off the page. Born in Hong Kong, he did not visit China until the build-up to the Beijing Olympics, when he made the vibrant photographs of his book Good Luck China. In Look at This People he makes another book about China, this time focused on life in the southern region of Yunnan. He says he was drawn to the uniquely carefree way people live there, and there is real energy in the pictures. Nothing illustrates this better than a section in which he wades into a local festival where people literally sling mud at each other: his camera did not survive the event, but the photographs that did are a testament to the vivacity of Yunnan's people and to his determination to capture it on film.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
