Portraits of the Hong Kong protests by ERIC, who from the early summer of 2019 repeatedly photographed the young people taking part, an extraordinary event crossing ordinary life. Hong Kong is his birthplace, and he had long photographed its people and streets when he met this great turning point. He sensed the young people as alter egos of his former self yet kept them on the far side of the lens, until he felt an urge to join in and walked with them, capturing their unyielding portraits. Photographing keeps a distance, yet there were also bodies melting in. A wavering identity: the fight to protect the identity of Hong Kong photographed by a man who left it long ago and whose own identity is mixed. Snapshot and portrait connect, and portraits of people living in Hong Kong now stand up in the book. He went to study in Japan in 1997, the year Hong Kong was returned to China.
