Art direction by Shin Akiyama
Snapshots from India that rebuild the way we see the country and the way we see people: the heat of overflowing crowds, the jostling movement of bodies, crossing glances, a whirl of chaos no one has seen from within. In his postscript ERIC describes being first swept into the crowd, from which individuals emerge sharply for an instant and then melt back; the crowd has a face as rich as a person's, and each individual is one of the countless cells of that living creature. At some point he stopped being an individual gaze and became the gaze of the crowd, standing with his camera at the centre of the whirlpool of humanity, a new experience in which he could rebuild himself together with the world. Indian society, he observes, is founded on the laws of nature and of men: wealth and poverty, beauty and ugliness, piety and vulgarity, noble and humble acts, the new and the old are all displayed openly in public as dazzling chaos.
