Selected and edited by Yoshihiko Ueda

The photographer Yoshihiko Ueda selected and edited 106 images from the work Daido Moriyama has made since 1964, the year he became an independent photographer, to the present. For Moriyama the city is a single vast object of desire and the world something that looms erotically. Fragments cut out at random from a world flooded with obscene colour carry the viewer off to another world, and the 106 images trace the career of a photographer who sought his own desire in each moment and never ceased to ask, in a radical manner, what photography is. The book was published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at Gallery 916, the space Ueda opened in 2012.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
