Two-volume work (Volume One)
The first of two volumes of Photo Ephemera, a visual autobiography constructed from Bruce LaBruce's personal and private snapshots: moments with lovers and friends, trips, and behind-the-scenes clips from his films. It is full of queer references, gay bars and chem parties, hotels and hospitals, street signs, sunsets and iconic faces including Genesis P-Orridge, Kembra Pfahler, Karl Lagerfeld and Beth Ditto. Explicit and transgressive pictures sit next to cute pictures of loved ones, holidays, churches and breakfast scenes. Citing Susan Sontag, for whom a photograph preserves the past but is also a way of handling the present, and Walter Benjamin's tiny spark of accident, the book is a way of taking part in LaBruce's life without being a part of it.
