In 1989 the painter Jeff Burton answered an ad for a stills photographer and found himself working in what he calls the other Hollywood, the gay porn industry. Over roughly a decade, mostly for Catalina Video and Falcon Studios, he shot promotional images for film posters, video boxes and magazine covers, drawing on sources as diverse as the Kobal Collection portraits of Hollywood icons, classic album covers of the 1960s and 70s and the portraiture of John Singer Sargent. He tested lighting and styling on thousands of Polaroids that sat untouched in his archive for years. Glamour Shots collects those cover images, removed from the means of production, and sets them beside better-known work later exhibited through his gallery and held in museum collections including MOCA Los Angeles and the Guggenheim. It is Burton's fifth monograph, after Untitled, Dreamland, The Other Place and Las Vegas.
