Does the image inevitably exhibit a metaphorical quality, as Blumenberg suggests, linked to the awareness of a crisis in philosophy’s claims to knowledge and universality? Is the image a seductive medium in the service of illusionism? Is the material image a simulation of a higher and more complex form circulating in the universe, which can only be intercepted by more sensitive and receptive minds? Or are there no images of a superior order, with everyone equally able to access the democratic field of visual possibilities?

But if we consider the material image as a simulation, is it therefore something other than the image it seeks to embody, and at best only a distant reference to something within a universal image? Or, if its identification or projection is unsuccessful, might what it shows be only an incomplete or partial figuration, or even a simulacrum?

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
