Scugnizzi is the term used for the local kids who overrun the town beaches of Naples in summer. Brett Lloyd's photographs, taken over two extended summers, are vignettes of daily drama on the beach that seem to channel Italian neorealist cinema of the 1940s and even smack of the bawdy Naples where Caravaggio sought exile. Black-and-white and colour pages show teenage boys in swimwear on the sand, a tattooed teenager leaning on a seafront wall, sunbathers on the rocks and a lean man caught mid-gesture in a street under festival lights.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
