Quincy is an artist book that gives immediate insight into Carl Andre's development as a sculptor. In place of an exhibition catalog for his 1973 solo show at the Addison Gallery, Andre hired a commercial photographer to document landscapes of his hometown, Quincy, Massachusetts. The stark black-and-white photographs show the scenes and raw materials that inspired much of his work. The cover is a photograph of a granite gravestone engraved ANDRE standing in snow with a cemetery behind it, and the pages shown online include a snowy quarry strewn with fallen blocks of stone and a snow-covered wood with piled logs.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
