All seven issues of the zine
Managing editor Jules Spector
Designed by Bryce Wilner
SHOOT was a self-published zine made by the photographer Paul Mpagi Sepuya from 2005 to 2008. Each issue was an experiment in conceiving an extended portrait with contact sheets, outtakes and text, and the subjects were his friends, muses and collaborators. Photocopied on the job and at copy centers, the issues keep the artist's hand and the marks of the copy machine that have defined queer zines since the 1970s. This book brings together all seven issues for the first time. Sepuya appears throughout the portraits, including in one issue devoted to his own self-portrait, and so do the mechanics of photography, drawing a line from this early work to his later Dark Room series and portrait practice. His pictures recall the history of the medium and challenge it, questioning the singularity of the portrait and the dialogue between artist, subjects and collaborators and complicating the representation of Black authorship. The cover shows a shirtless man with closed eyes wearing a name tag that reads NICOLAS under a SHOOT masthead, and the spreads shown online are contact-sheet grids of repeated frames of a shirtless man.
