44 photographic abstractions
Edited by James Hoff and Laurie Simmons Studio
Designed by Rick Myers
Salvation is an artist book by Jimmy DeSana, conceived shortly before his death in 1990 and left unpublished. It contains 44 of his late photographic abstractions, which meditate on loss, death and nothingness: relics, body parts, flowers and fruits that he altered with collage and darkroom manipulations into pictures that are both intimate and otherworldly, a quiet counterpoint to the bold political statements that dominated work about HIV/AIDS at the time. Variations of many of the works were first shown at his last exhibition at Pat Hearn Gallery in 1988. He then began a maquette that used black-and-white images as placeholders for the color works and, on his deathbed, dictated instructions to his friend Laurie Simmons, who noted them on every page of the single-copy maquette; with those notes, surviving slides and color gels from his archive, her studio completed the book. The cover shows a glowing orange figure with a hand at its mouth, and the pages shown online include red roses inside a white abstract shape on black and a newspaper clipping.
