On Onions is a photographic study of onions by Elad Lassry and his first artist's book, a work that exists only in book form. Its taxonomy has sections on red, yellow and white onions, each with its own taste and benefits, and its biology-workbook style is at once wry, refreshing and disorienting, drawing on what the artist calls the confusion that results when something is slightly wrong in a photograph. It was composed by the artist and arranged by Stuart Bailey, and includes an essay by Angie Keefer on the effects of sliced onions on human tear ducts. The cover is white with two round emblems, one with a red globe and one with a brown globe, and the pages shown online include a short story titled Three Onions about a boy who wore goggles and a photograph of a single brown onion on a white ground.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
