Stéphane Duroy's European journey began some twenty years ago. It was during his work in the former GDR from 1990 that he became aware of the possibility of interpreting history through a present that carries the indelible traces of the tragic hours of the twentieth century. From the First World War to the advent of the Third Reich, Duroy deciphers contemporary murderous misunderstandings. These photographs, made in a region particularly affected by these conflicts, fall within this perspective. They refer back to this past and are so many questions about the very idea of memory.
