Gilbert Garcin's work is a comedy in a hundred diverse acts, as La Fontaine said of his fables, but without any accompanying moral. The images in which he stages himself are neither self-portraits nor the chapters of a gratifying imaginary biography. On the contrary, each picture is autonomous, shows an action perfectly clear in its course and its aim, and makes one smile at the mishaps of its protagonist. All these images are marked by humour, which is all the more effective because their mood always sits in between: between funny and pathetic, between amusement and anguish, between strange and absurd. This multiple ambivalence means that Gilbert Garcin's pictures always touch their viewers intimately, because they always find in them, in some way, an echo of their own concerns.
