This book sheds light on a life as much as on a body of work: the life of a photographer who was also an artist, crossing many countries from Cuba to France and staying notably in the United States, with South America and the Caribbean as a constant and Spain as a backdrop. This means a network of affinities with all these cultures. The cities, Havana, New York, Madrid and Paris, where artistic and literary personalities gather, are what attract Jesse Fernández. His photographs are so many restitutions of his encounters with writers, painters, musicians, dancers and actors, and the list is eloquent and very varied: Alicia Alonso, Francis Bacon, Jorge Luis Borges, Luis Buñuel, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Emil Cioran, Julio Cortázar, Salvador Dalí, Miles Davis, Marlene Dietrich, Marcel Duchamp, Carlos Fuentes, Willem de Kooning, Ernest Hemingway, Wifredo Lam, Gabriel García Márquez, Joan Miró, Françoise Sagan, Antonio Saura, Elizabeth Taylor and Edgar Varèse. The work develops between the 1950s and the 1980s. If it concerns Cuba first, before and during the Castro revolution, that is not the starting point of the photographer's career, which began in Colombia in 1952 after studies in painting.
