In 1960 Lisetta Carmi chose to abandon her career as a pianist to take up photography. She took part in left-wing protest movements in reaction to the neo-fascist and reactionary rise of the 1960s and, inspired by this context, used the camera as a political tool of experience and sharing with those who aspire to recognition in the social space of the common. Her series I Travestiti in particular depicts with gentleness and complicity the life of a community of travestis, with trans identities, in the former ghetto of Genoa; she was the first to document the LGBTIQ community in Italy, at a time when gender identity was a real taboo in a Catholic, ultra-conservative country. Her gaze also rests on the working world: her series on the port of Genoa capture the intensity of the body at work and its encounter with the gigantic, devouring body of the port industry. The rest of the exhibition is devoted to portraits of the American poet Ezra Pound, then secluded for years in silence. Her work thus makes visible, in a way that is both poetic and political, those who urgently demand a community to come, and the urgency of the image of their singularity. This edition is part of a global educational project of the École nationale supérieure de la photographie in Arles: five students, supervised by a teaching team, meet professionals (gallery owners, curators, researchers, scenographers) in order to build this book and the curating of the exhibition.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
