Delving into fundamental questions about the meaning of human activity as it unfolds in the economic, industrial, scientific, medical, social and artistic fields, each of Ali Kazma's videos highlights a particular aspect of his study of the changes taking place in our contemporary world, gradually constituting a vast archive of the human condition. His approach is underpinned by the will to add to the complexity and mystery of the world, and to open and arouse an aesthetic and ethical discourse from the interconnection of a set of themes. Entitled "Souterrain", his solo exhibition at the Jeu de Paume sets out to show the evolution of his work over the last ten years. It includes about twenty video works, two of them made for the exhibition, and a photographic publication, an artist's book. The videos are presented as large-format wall projections; immersed in the space, the viewer faces the rhythms of these projections, whose visual impact is astonishingly spectacular. Since the beginning of his work Kazma has made more than sixty videos, a body of work made up of many independent films but also of two large series, Obstructions and Resistance.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
