Going against her attraction to capitals and urban centres, and in continuity with her earlier work centred on identity and territory, Susanna Pozzoli invites us to reflect on the places we love in daily life, those that are dear to us, places of reverie and memory where our feelings of belonging to a space are revealed. Answering a widely circulated call for participation, the people photographed told her about their favourite places: places charged with a personal history, with a shared experience gone for ever, little corners for observing nature or for giving way to nostalgia. Through the camera, she was invited to discover these personal environments and to enter the heart of secret gardens; the shots were taken on these very sites, and the emotional ties to places of predilection and the memories were evoked in an audio interview. She invites us in turn to leave room for our imagination, to discover what one does not see in her photographs: behind the portraits and landscapes, it is an imaginary stroll through their magical places that these people entrusted to her, a true work on intimate projection.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
