Óscar Muñoz's work revolves around the image in relation to memory, loss and the precariousness of life. Through interventions in media as different as photography, engraving, drawing, installation, video and sculpture, it defies any systematic categorisation. His career began in the 1970s in Cali, in a context of intense cultural and multidisciplinary effervescence that allowed a generation of writers, photographers, filmmakers and leading artists to emerge, among them Carlos Mayolo, Luis Ospina, Fernell Franco and Andrés Caicedo. At that time Muñoz worked with large-format charcoal drawings, highlighting sad, sometimes sordid figures with a deep psychological charge. From then on the founding axes of his practice asserted themselves: a constant and marked interest in the social aspect, a very specific treatment of materials, the use of the camera image as a tool of memory, and the search for the dramatic possibilities of plays of shadow and light in relation to the definition of the image.
