Chantal Nedjib, an image consultant, and Sophie Bernard, a specialised journalist, joined forces to write a practical guide to prizes, residencies, grants and other professional awards dedicated to the medium. The book is addressed mainly to photographers and patrons, and more broadly to the whole ecosystem, as a how-to manual that decodes the rules and customs of prizes so as to draw the greatest benefit from them and avoid pitfalls. Starting from the observation that photographic prizes, residencies and grants are ever more numerous, the authors wanted to understand the springs of this enthusiasm, patrons' interest in creating them and photographers' motivation to take part. They interviewed two hundred professionals, heads of institutions, curators, publishers, galleries, photographers, observers, patrons, journalists and collectors, on the impact of the main French prizes, and seventy of them contributed their views. A survey of the main prizes recognised by the profession in France closes the book.
