Planches Contact, a festival at large format and an invitation to travel. Founded on the principle of public commissions in the territory, the festival invites and hosts on residency, throughout the year, photographers from around the world, whose work is then shown in various places in the city, in the open air and at very large format. In this way it encourages and facilitates the creation of new work and, at the same time, takes part in the subjective documentation of the territory's evolution by artists. This year the exhibitions and installations in the museum space of Les Franciscaines, the production of films and videos, the place given to the moving image and the co-edition of books are the great novelties of the twelfth edition. A pioneer of open-air exhibitions, a concept since widely taken up, Planches Contact was in 2020 one of the few festivals to take place despite the pandemic. For the second consecutive year it was prepared in a special climate of lockdowns, easings and curfews, which inevitably influenced the photographers' work; the organisers were particularly glad to have again invited artists on residency and helped them produce, without any thematic directive, other than encouraging them to pursue their research.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
