"Valérie Villieu's photographs depict bodies, but are they human bodies, or should one rather speak of corpuscles, of anonymous particles in a universe devoid of coherence? What is this place where these folds, these curves, these never quite straight lines are found? Reflections signify rupture, passage: from one state we pass to another. Photography, supposedly a reflection of the real, is here only a pretext to transform and work on it. A body wholly coiled up, unrecognisable, or a fragment of a body whose folds mark a border. This border is doubled by the one instituted by the frame. The spectator finds themselves before surfaces, but a depth emerges from reflection on the ORGANIC (material, if you like) aspect of all work of transformation, hence of production. There is a flesh of the world beyond the linguistic rationalisation of a creator/spectator subject observing an object (the external world)." Text by Steen Billejorgensen.
