The title is rather enigmatic and out of step with the photographs: once upon a time, fragments of a story of wicked sisters, on the road before the very last day. Myriam and Olivia met in 1999 at the photography school in Vevey, Switzerland, and this book was born of their friendship. In 2010 they conceived a travel project: to cross the United States from Chicago to San Francisco, with the constraint that Myriam would take one photograph of Olivia every day. After 7,201 km and 120 hours in the car, having passed through Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Colorado City (Texas), Albuquerque, Santa Fe and more, they had made over 700 photographs. The book speaks of the freedom that travel offers, of the complicity between two people who throw themselves into adventure and landscape. For the time of an image, Olivia's figure, like a fictional character, inscribes itself in this American mythology.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
