Immersed in an environment he generally keeps at a distance, André Mérian gives a representation of landscape through a reading of architecture and environment reduced to a set of signs and objects. Never Mind goes beyond the observation of urban sprawl yet evokes no less the urbanisation and the emergence of buildings, figured by a staging of books or by chequered ceramic tiles. In the photographed spaces natural elements remain: a waterfall, arid vegetation, bamboo, trees. But the vegetation is cut by a road turned wasteland, strewn with abandoned signs and objects; the bamboos are severed, the trees dried out or masked by installations that foreshadow their disappearance. If the stake of Never Mind is to state and denounce the dislocation of a world, André Mérian's great skill is to signify its collapse without exhibiting its ruin. Text by Isabelle Tessier.
