The Mediterranean, mother of our civilisation, sea and mother if we accept that all life comes from the ocean, peopled by the imagination of ancient gods and goddesses, Aphrodite, Neptune, Poseidon, by the wanderings of Paul of Tarsus, Mary Magdalene, Marco Polo, Chateaubriand. In 1951 I crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and saw Africa for the first time, beginning my travel-reportages for the magazine Réalités, for which I worked more than twenty years, discovering Italy, Rome, Sardinia, Sicily, the Gargano, Greece, Lesbos, Paros, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Lebanon, Alexandria, Egypt, Tunisia, North Africa, and only last year, by boat, Delos and southern Italy; today photography's miracle reveals to us the Mediterranean's light, not only an image but also our shared life, our bodies in the sea, an invitation to see this Mediterranean with new eyes.
