The How much can you carry? series grew out of Floriane de Lassée's fascination with lines of walkers bearing loads as varied as they are voluminous along African roads, a project that gradually extended across four continents, now covering around ten countries from Rwanda and Ethiopia to Nepal, Japan, Indonesia and Brazil. Through frontally framed, strikingly economical photographs, the artist builds portraits of these carriers from every corner of the world, each invited to pose with what matters most to them, often simple necessities such as grain sacks or bundles of straw, posing with curiosity, amusement and pride rather than pity, before the series turns to other, less visible kinds of weight: tradition, social expectation and family burden.
