The Institut Néerlandais set out to confront two contemporary photography scenes, French and Dutch, among them several artists still little known to the public and works never before shown. Curator Gabriel Bauret, invited to choose Dutch works, and curator Erik Kessels, invited to choose French ones, worked entirely independently of one another, so the resulting exhibition reveals two distinct visions and histories: Kessels highlighting a young generation pushing against certain photographic traditions, Bauret foregrounding a sensitivity to the relationship between photography and pictorial heritage, with artists including Valérie Belin, Charlotte Dumas, Koos Breukel and Mélanie Bonajo.
