The first monograph by Carla Williams. Made in private between 1984 and 1999 and kept mostly to herself for more than thirty years, the pictures form a complete self-portrait of a young queer Black woman exploring the realm of her own possibility. Williams began the black-and-white and colour portraits at eighteen, while studying at Princeton, wanting to make pictures in her own image: her mind was filled in equal measure with the canonical images of a male-driven history of the medium and with the posing women she had found in her father's pornography collection. Using her own body, she made the portraits she had never seen.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
