The first systematic project to catalogue Milan's industrial architecture, carried out between 1978 and 1980 and exhibited at the Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea in Milan in 1983. Basilico spent Easter 1978 walking the city zone by zone, map in hand, and for the first time "saw" the streets and, with them, the facades of the factories standing out clean and isolated against an unexpectedly blue sky, where the familiar view suddenly became unfamiliar. He found a strip of the city stripped of its daily movement, without parked cars, without people, without noise, its architecture restored, filtered by light, in a scenographic and monumental way. Through the viewfinder of his Nikon he built a method for understanding what is often observed in a confused, short-sighted way. This debut book, later reissued in 1983 and 2009 and revisited in a 2022 anniversary volume, launched Basilico's career and established the frontal, dispassionate language of industrial-landscape photography that would define his work.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
