Opening volume of a two-part series covering the years from 1980 onward
Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Hasselblad Foundation, Gothenburg

One of the foremost photographic artists of her generation, whose work in this first volume of a series was largely made in the eighties while studying at art school in Stockholm, a period that laid the groundwork for later practice. Inspired and fascinated by the very essence of the medium and the almost alchemical nature of darkroom process, in a period of experimentation and curiosity, using the opportunities offered by analogue technique, a creative investigation was conducted into classical themes: landscapes, portraits, nudes, and still lifes. Collected and presented together, the pictures also highlight an importance for and influence on later generations. Born in 1950 in Finland, the artist passed away in Stockholm in 2017, and was the very first woman to hold a professorship in the medium at what was then called the School of Photography and Film at the University of Gothenburg.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
