This volume gathers some fifty pictures, several of them unpublished, chosen by the artist's own hand and drawn from La Disparition des lucioles, published in 1982, together with others, iconic or lesser known, that share the same sense of displacement. This relation to movement at work in the pictures is as much a matter of Denis Roche's physical movement between here — the place where he presses the shutter — and elsewhere, where he is not or no longer, as of the handling of his camera, which he does not hesitate to turn around or to divert from its usual framing and its signifying quality. That device, recurrent in his work, can be read as an extension and an incarnation of the artist, even as a questioning of the photographic act; and beyond the physical, the movement also appears in time, between the alignment or the spacing of the frames, in the distance between the time lived and the time represented, and in the transfer from the eye of the maker at a given moment to that of a viewer at any other.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
