Text by Walter Guadagnini
Three bodies of work: Night Ski, Winter Aquapark and Navi da crociera. Cerio offers an entirely new view of well-known places of mass tourism: ski slopes at night, water parks in winter, empty cruise ships. He works on absence and silence, portraying unusually empty spaces that reveal their surreal and estranging essence: ski lifts, water slides and the interiors of huge cruise ships, photographed without people, show their own essence and become the object in itself. The absence of the human figure is so central that it immediately recalls a famous passage of Walter Benjamin’s Little History of Photography on Atget’s empty Paris, read as an anticipation of surrealist estrangement; here the reality is estranging in a double way (Walter Guadagnini).
