The Redemption of Nature stems from new research by Stefano Cerio focusing on Mediterranean landscapes affected by major wildfires in recent years. From Pantelleria, the Zingaro Nature Reserve and Monte Cofano in Sicily, to the Montiferru area near Oristano in Sardinia, the artist has followed over time the traces left by fire, directing his gaze not so much at the destruction itself as at nature's ability to regenerate and gradually reclaim its spaces, documenting the process of ecological succession. Rather than documenting the catastrophe, Cerio observes the moment when nature begins to reveal its vital force once again. The process of observation, study and image-making unfolded over a long period, in stark contrast to the speed with which fire destroyed the vegetation. The images portray suspended, silent landscapes, where the signs of burning coexist with the first signs of rebirth: blackened trunks from which new shoots emerge, charred palm trees beginning to grow again, shrubs and prickly pears taking root once more, and fungal growths developing on burnt olive trees.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
