The two critical texts by the curators tell of Arturo Zavattini’s approach to photography, discovered in 1949 when his father gave him his first camera and cultivated in close contact with his work in cinema. The pictures are organised in five sections retracing his journeys: from the Journey to Lucania, documenting the ethnographic expedition with Ernesto De Martino, through the pictures taken in the streets of Rome, Naples and other Italian cities, to the 1956 reportage in Bangkok and northern Thailand, and the pictures made in Cuba, which include a chance meeting with Ernesto "Che" Guevara. A last section gathers pictures taken on film sets and backstage, portraying figures such as Sophia Loren and Vittorio De Sica. The five chapters invite us to reread important aspects of the cultural and social history of the time, to discover an important author of Italian photography, and to reflect on the deep reasons of his realism and on the theoretical frame ethnography offered to realism.
