Introduction and conversation by Leonetta Bentivoglio
In parole series
The book by the master of cinema, first published in 1993 and long out of print, presents more than three hundred of his photographs arranged in sequences and accompanied by sixty short stories he wrote himself, all beginning with the same words: "Once". A new text by Leonetta Bentivoglio introduces a long dialogue between the journalist and Wenders on the links between images and words, cinema, travel, love and solitude. Then come the sixty stories, texts and pictures in dialogue on an extraordinary journey across different countries, in which we meet Godard, Kurosawa, Handke, Scorsese and Coppola. The places and faces anticipate or run parallel to the frames of his films, but sometimes form an independent narrative core. The stories are brief narrative snapshots, relics of the present or ruins of our time, some already ruins from birth, like the interiors of diners along the highways, a Dakota with its wings removed or abandoned drive-ins. Wenders shows us the landscape of our age, the places where we live our relationships and set our feelings.
