Spreading from the 1990s above all in the slums of Buenos Aires and then in the favelas and peripheries of all South America, the use of paco grew sharply at the beginning of the 2000s. It is an extremely harmful drug made from the waste of cocaine processing, mixed with kerosene, glue, rat poison or powdered glass. The young, its most frequent users, come to need up to twenty doses a day, with devastating effects, since it creates immediate addiction. Bispuri entered this hell of the living dead to tell the suffering and life of the peripheral ghettos, travelling through Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Paraguay and sharing the daily life of paco users. As with Encerrados, he offers a precise documentation of a little-known phenomenon of worrying proportions. In 2015, blindfolded so as not to recognise the place, he was taken into one of the "drug kitchens" to end his reportage where it all begins. He tells of this, and of the ruined lives of the users and their families, through images of great narrative and emotional impact, and guides us with his own words through what he saw and felt. Many pictures are published here for the first time. "Paco is not meant to be only an exposé of a terrible drug, but an anthropological and sociological exploration of the new poverty in South America."
