Three years of work in ten Italian prisons

A reportage made inside the main Italian prisons, gathering three years of work and carrying on the journey begun in the jails of South America with Encerrados. The author is the first to have obtained from the prison administration department of the Ministry of Justice the authorisation to visit some of the most important penitentiaries in the country, building a project that documents these buildings and those who live in them: an enquiry into the mental and physical state of a human being deprived of freedom. He recorded the condition of ten different Italian prisons, larger and smaller and with different degrees of security, from 2014 onward — from the Ucciardone in Palermo to Poggioreale in Naples, from the Roman jails of Regina Coeli and Rebibbia Femminile to the new prison at Capanne in Perugia, by way of Milan with Bollate and San Vittore, Venice with the Giudecca, the penal colony of Isili near Cagliari and the small prison of Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
