Deliberately without pictures
Introduction by Emanuele Trevi
Translated by Matteo Martelli
First Italian translation
Lampi series

A classic of French literature and, at once, of thinking about the medium, translated into Italian for the first time. "What pushed me to write was regret for the wrong pictures, the ones I did not manage to take, that I could not make, that turned out invisible, like ghosts. I thought of writing in order to find again the same sensation I wanted to give those pictures," Hervé Guibert — writer, journalist, image-maker and critic for Le Monde — said of this book in a 1981 interview. Deliberately holding no pictures at all, it tells of his relation with the photographic: his first erotic work, a reportage on his mother whose likeness will never be shown, the slow undoing of a print destined to wear away and die, and then images fantastic or so intimate as to become invisible. On the thirtieth anniversary of the author’s death and the fortieth of the first edition, the book offers an occasion to know reflections that remain remarkably current and penetrating on the relation between picture, writing and personal life, accompanied by a text from Emanuele Trevi introducing the work and the author to Italian readers.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
