"A book with figures and places — is that not a novel?" Its episodes were laid down in earlier books; the characters, who were designated there only by initials, now come forward with their faces uncovered and are named, affectionately, by their first names. Faces appear and disappear, relayed by shadows, until nothing is left but the places they passed through and the objects they touched; and when the places themselves fade and the objects are spirited away, there remains the light, its simple manifestations, full of mystery, close to the most intense comfort. At the end the photographer wants to go looking for them in the night. The volume was first published for the exhibition held from September to November 1984 at the galerie Agathe Gaillard in Paris.
